An alternative source of protein that has been used is the earthworm meal as it contains high quality protein with na appropriate amino acid profile and fatty acid essencital for feeding fish and other animals. The use of earthworm meal uis animal nutrition has been tested for fowl mammals and fish with good results.

The earthworm meal has a high proteinic content and a balanced amino acid and fatty acid profile, features which make this proteinic source a good alternative for substituting mainstream feeds of fish meal. Considering that earthworms are excellent baits, it is believe they may have chemoreceptor features that attract animals. Many characteristic of the earthworm meal promote its use as raw material for formulating feeds for all kinds of animals. Among the main characteristics are the high proteinic content and its fatty acids qualities, similar to fish and marine animals as it has a large number of unsaturated fatty acids, both linoleic and linolenic acids.  

In recent research by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) showed that the apparent earthworm meal digestibility in dry material was by around 70 percent and the apparent protein digestibility 98 percent.
